List of Individuals and Groups Awarded the 2025 Fujian Youth May Fourth Medal
(From a post by Fujian Daily)
As the Deputy General Manager and Technical Director of Fujian Electronic Port Co., Ltd., Liu Jiantao led his team to start from scratch and boldly venture into the “uncharted territory” of smart port operations. Driven by technological innovation, he has spearheaded the transformation and upgrading of traditional terminals toward smarter and greener practices. His journey of hard work is a vivid microcosm of the sense of responsibility and proactive spirit displayed by young people in the new era.
Liu Jiantao, the Pioneer in Boosting Hong Kong’s Technological Development:
Break the deadlock with innovation, and build dreams with responsibility.
In 2019, Liu Jiantao joined Xiamen Port Group Holdings and took the lead in establishing a port AI team. At that time, the team faced a “three-nothing” predicament: lacking experience, lacking data, and lacking external support. Core issues such as port equipment upgrades, production adaptation, and operational control all had to be explored from scratch. Starting from a complete blank slate—no prior production environment, no existing hardware conditions, and no established business logic—the team embarked on the journey of developing intelligent port products.
He wears multiple hats: he’s responsible for team recruitment and development, deeply involved in technological R&D and market expansion, and tailors customized solutions for different ports. After six years of growth, the team has expanded to over 120 members, with R&D and product design personnel accounting for more than 80%. During the R&D process, the busy nature of terminal operations results in extremely limited equipment downtime, making system debugging and testing conditions exceptionally stringent. The team has to repeatedly test on computers to avoid errors, and can only carry out online debugging during off-peak hours. In the event of sudden environmental changes, they must quickly complete on-site design and algorithm adjustments. Team members often take on multiple roles, handling both hardware installation and software debugging. Led by Liu Jiantao, the team has worked around the clock, relentlessly tackling challenges. Despite having a limited number of personnel, they’ve broken the monopoly on core technologies, opened up new pathways for the intelligent upgrading of traditional container terminals, achieved a leap toward unmanned Quay Cranes and Yard Cranes, freed themselves from reliance on foreign imports, and significantly reduced the costs of construction, commissioning, and maintenance for smart port automated terminals.
As a young technical professional and a Party member, Liu Jiantao puts into practice the philosophy that “technological innovation transforms port concepts and reshapes the port ecosystem.” He leverages artificial intelligence technologies to enhance safety, equipment performance, operational processes, and scheduling in ports. Firmly committed to independent innovation, he actively implements the strategic plans for building green and smart ports. Driven by shared passions, he leads his team to continuously optimize products and achieve breakthroughs through sustained innovation. Looking ahead, he will continue to promote technological innovation and the commercialization of its achievements, tirelessly striving to build world-class smart and green ports. By harnessing technology to boost port development, he will contribute to the nation’s goal of becoming a transportation powerhouse.

On the afternoon of September 9, Special Forum Four of the 8th “Silk Road Maritime” International Cooperation Forum—the “Silk Road Maritime” Technology Forum—was held in Xiamen. With the theme “AI-Native Intelligent Port—Large Models and Multi-Agent Collaboration to Build a New Paradigm for Fully Autonomous Ports,” the forum brought together industry leaders from port operators, equipment manufacturers, and research institutions at home and abroad, aiming to establish a global platform for exchange on port and shipping technologies and jointly explore new pathways for the digital and Intelligent transformation of ports.
During operations, if a Spreader or the container it is lifting accidentally collides with containers already stacked in the Stack yard, it can trigger an incident commonly referred to as “bowling,” which, through a chain reaction, may result in damage to multiple containers and cargo, and even lead to casualties and operational disruptions—posing serious safety hazards.
Recently, Chen Zhiping, Party Secretary and Chairman of Fujian Port Group, granted an exclusive interview to the renowned host Wu Xiaoli, engaging in a thorough and candid discussion on topics including the smart‑technology development of Fujian ports, their green transformation, the ecosystem‑building efforts of the “Silk Road Maritime” Alliance, and the future direction of first‑class port development.
