The country’s largest port has been forced to shut down and is now paralyzed!

According to foreign media reports, starting from midnight on October 29, Dar es Salaam Port—the country's largest port—has been closed due to social unrest that erupted following Tanzania's general election.

Since the general election on October 29, Tanzania has been plunged into violent unrest and a communications blackout, with unconfirmed reports of casualties circulating. International maritime services company Inchcape issued a notice stating that, as of 6 p.m. local time on October 29, the government had imposed an indefinite nationwide curfew and cut off internet communications.

The Port of Dar es Salaam has ceased operations starting from midnight, and all current operations have now been suspended.

The international maritime services company confirmed that, after contacting the terminal operator, the port has already fallen into a state of paralysis.

Last year, India’s Adani International Ports Holdings signed a 30-year concession agreement to operate Terminal No. 2 at the Port of Dar es Salaam. This terminal has four Berths and an annual cargo-handling capacity of 1 million TEUs. In 2023, its actual throughput reached 820,000 TEUs, accounting for approximately 83% of Tanzania’s total container throughput.

Inchcape stated that it has not yet received any updates regarding the latest developments at Mtwara Port and Tanga Port in the country. The shipping service provider also noted that its employees are currently unable to use email normally or go to the office for work, but telephone lines remain open and voice calls can still be made.
